Ofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone drug class considered to be a second-generation fluoroquinolone. Ofloxacin is a racemic mixture, which consists of 50% levofloxacin (the biologically active component) and 50% of its enantiomer (mirror image) dextrofloxacin. Dexamethasone is a very potent and highly selective long acting glucocorticoid.
Ofloxacin functions by inhibiting DNA gyrase, a type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV, which is an enzyme necessary to separate replicated DNA, thereby inhibiting bacterial cell division. Dexamethasone acts by controlling the rate of synthesis of proteins important for chemotactic and immunologic reactions and suppresses inflammatory response.
Upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, or trouble sleeping may occur.
Caution in patients with liver disease. Ofloxacin is also considered to be contraindicated within the pediatric population, pregnancy, nursing mothers, patients with psychiatric illnesses and in patients with epilepsy or other seizure disorders.
